I use Memsource daily for my largest clients as a freelance translator. It is easy to log in and get started right away. With the features of Accept and Complete, I always have a good view of what is New, To be Done, and Completed. As various clients of the same industry work with Memsource, the TM and the Search function are key for me to ensure high quality.
  • Easy to accept projects
  • Love the TM
  • Love the feature of following the changes
  • Search function is extremely helpful
  • QA ensures consistency and makes me aware of any inconsistencies
  • Adjusting the filters
  • Find and replace
  • A feature for deadlines would be helpful
I really like Memsource because I have different clients using it and it is easy to switch between login and clients. I would prefer a better Preview option. Also, I need to observe character limits and would like to have an easy feature to do so, especially if a client splits long descriptions into various segments. I appreciate the Quality function to ensure consistency.

I use Memsource for translation/editing of various kinds of content mainly from English to Japanese, such as Web site, e-learning, user guides, marketing materials, etc.
  • Display of matching TM data..
  • Indication of repetitions and ability to specify as exception.
  • Display of glossary terms.
  • Easy-to-use search function.
  • In the case of EN to JA translation, we enter text and then convert it to get the correct final text (word or phrase) which uses correct Chinese character(s), as there are often multiple Chinese characters with the same reading but different meanings. When those conversion options are displayed, it is usually possible to change our selection among them by hitting the Tab key, but in Memsource, hitting the Tab key makes us leave the text conversion and move to the source segment, so we must make sure to use arrow keys to choose the right conversion option when using Memsource.
  • When there are tag elements used in the source text, the tags must exist in the target text of course, but the tag order also must be the same. The tags cannot be moved around in the segment, which causes problems in the case of the Japanese language, because the word order differs between EN and JA.
  • In the Japanese language, Italics are basically not used, so there must be no texts between the tags which specify Italic font. But then the segment cannot be confirmed and the job status cannot be changed to "Complete".
Memsource is easy to use and I like using it for any type of translation work, but when the source texts contain tags, they tend to generate issues that cannot be solved due to the difference in characteristics between source and target languages, so they bring me headaches. But you cannot know if the source texts contain tags until you open the file and take a look at the contents...

Memsource is my preferred CAT tool because it is user-friendly and speeds up my work as a translator. Filtering segments is very easy.
On the other hand, it is hard to keep track of my progress when there are many locked segments as those are included in the word count progress.
  • Filtering segments.
  • QA results can be filtered by type so you don't waste time with false positive errors.
  • Exporting bilingual documents.
  • How to keep track of progress when there are many locked segments in the file.
I think Memsource is suited for all scenarios when the Preview section is available.

Memsource allows me to analyze translation source files in any format and gives a clear indication of the work involved. It also helps me save time by reusing translations and by suggesting the right words while I am translating each sentence. In addition, when I work for clients, I can easily use the same interface I am familiar with. During that time, it also shows the client's style guide which helps me maintain the same tone. Another excellent feature I love about Memsource is its QA. It spots some common errors and also helps in automatically fixing them. Overall, I love using Memsource and would recommend it to freelance translators.
  • Supporting Multiple File Formats.
  • Saving time by reusing translations.
  • Quality Assurance Checks.
  • When using Tamil Unicode, sometimes the letters are not shown properly and typing is also difficult.
  • Offline translation (DOCX) is little confusing and difficult.
  • Machine Translation for Tamil can be better.
It is very appropriate for the translation of files in various formats. Whether you are an individual translator or part of a team, this can be used comfortably and you can track the progress easily. It is not very appropriate for any creative work (that is, it always expects a source and a target.)

Memsource is a very useful platform for translators. As a freelance translator, I use it in almost every project with several companies since 2016. Nice and user-friendly interface, rapidity of translation, handy termbases, and translation memories: this all positive features I can say while describing Memsource. The platform helps to establish good and easy professional communication between the translation company and the translator. Highly recommend.
  • Fast and accurate target text substitution from translation memory
  • Visualization of the original file at the bottom of the page
  • Combination of several documents into one when translating
  • Automatic saving of work progress
  • Automatic text formatting
  • Sometimes when I completed my work, the access to my Memsource account is blocked. It will be better to unblock it in this kind of situation
  • Maybe add a progress line in percentage in Memsource editor. Сurrently I have to reload the main page in order to check my progress
  • The machine translation should be available when needed without any restrictions
The translation of big texts with repetitions can be perfectly done in Memsource. Last time I worked on a big project with one company. The project contained about 15 documents with repetitions. Thanks to Memsource I combined these documents in one working file and saved a lot of time for translation. Small projects without repetitions can be translated manually.

I use it to translate Polish-English and English-Polish texts. Memsource is very easy to use, is user-friendly and works without faults or breakdowns. It's an excellent tool to use in business. I would recommend it to anyone who would like an easy and user-friendly tool. Great software from a great and helpful company.
  • Quality check - excellent
  • Showing TM results from which segments can be copied
  • Navigation - very easy.
  • Easy login.
  • Find and replace - a little tool to do it without having to show segments in the filter option would be helpful.
  • Creating a desktop (own) dictionary
  • Possibility to export to a Word document (not bilingual)
It can be used to handle any translation. I can't think of anything not appropriate.

We are using Memsource as our main CAT tool and manage most of our projects there. Memsource is a cloud-based CAT tool and so easy to use compared to other CAT tools. Depending on your subscription, it gives you a certain number of translator users which you can create for your translators. You can create as many as you like but keep a certain amount active. This is a great feature because the translator doesn't have to have a paid license.
  • Cloud-based
  • TM and TB management
  • Being able to create translator users
  • It used to accept INDD files and convert them to IDML but now it doesn't. It's a big downgrade in my opinion.
  • QA feature can be improved. Too many false positives and cannot be customised in detail.
  • When another server assigns a project to our own server, it doesn't come up in the search function.
Memsource is a great tool for managing multilingual projects as you can overview the project in the cloud very easily. If your translators use the browser editor or use the upload to server function frequently you can get progress updates which is really helpful for big projects. And you don't have to worry about translator licenses as you can create them for the translators.

In our translation company, we use Memsource every day to process many different file types and get word count analysis which is helpful for our quote stage and then assign translators to actually do the work and deliver it back to us. We also use Memsorce to run quality assurance and ensure our delivery is up to standard.
  • Processing files with Memsource is quite easy and it can understand the correct type and rules most of the time successfully.
  • Setting up a project and assigning it, briefly getting something started and going ahead is simple which is great as we need speed and ease during the day when dealing with many simultaneous jobs.
  • TM management is easier than some other CAT tools I tried, collecting all languages into a TM is creating less clutter.
  • Definitely, it would be great to somehow improve the QA function, maybe by AI etc - but this needs to be studied and improved for each language separately. For example, Arabic is not particularly well functioning and creating false positives.
  • It would have been great to select UK English as default EN instead of anytime we put a source file as English it understands US English and checks spelling by that which creates false positives.
  • It was great to have the option to convert INDD to IDML but now it does not allow uploading INDD files thus we have to either get IDML from clients or convert ourselves but no one has an InDesign license waiting on each computer in a company.
I would definitely recommend it to project managers working in a translation company due to how easy, online, fast, and consistent the system is because more than likely you'll be multitasking, and no need to deal with downloading and packages, etc. Instead, you can just get a project started or simply get your analyse and do a quote and leave there knowing it'll be saved and be there when you need to search for it.

We use Phrase to translate our site text into multiple languages so that users can select their preferred language across all our domains. Our translations are done both through Phrase's automated machine translation and by translators who then upload their work into Phrase. My company also makes all copy updates by creating keys and entering the text in Phrase, allowing us to make changes to our site text without involving development work (beyond the integration of the key). Phrase allows us to be flexible in making text and translation updates with minimal development effort.
  • Creating and assigning jobs for translations, updates, etc.
  • Automatic machine translation integration is useful
  • Easy to switch between locales to make adjustments
  • All exports from Phrase to GitHub are compiled into a single PR which means that we have to create a 'queue' when merging branches. If anyone has an open PR for Phrase changes, no one else can merge and export until that PR is merged to integration, or else the second person's changes will be rolled into the first person's PR
  • If you create a key and use the auto-fill machine translation feature but later make edits to the key, the auto-translated text will not be updated
  • We've had several cases of conflicts between our yml files and the text entered into Phrase due to things like spaces or quotation marks not appearing correctly
Phrase has lightened our dev effort significantly for making text changes. We can now assign these tasks to our product managers and the process of creating branches and keys is very streamlined. We've also found the auto-translations to be helpful for smaller pieces of text that do not require a translator; when we do use a translator, Phrase's "Job" feature allows us to simply assign certain keys.

While the workflow within Phrase is uncomplicated, we've encountered issues with how Phrase and GitHub integrate. All changes exported from Phrase go to a single GitHub PR, meaning we have to continually check amongst our team that no one has an open PR before we merge and export our branches. If someone has time-consuming changes, this creates a significant bottleneck. Also, even if the Phrase work was specific to a single locale, files from all the locales are exported to GitHub. This means that reviewers often have to sift through unnecessary files in order to find the relevant updates.

We've been using Memsource to support our clients looking for a simple solution that helps them get their files translated in a timely manner while keeping everything consistent thanks to the use of translation memories, termbases and a commenting feature to handle all context-related queries from translators, proofreaders, and editors.
  • It's cloud-based, meaning it will likely work on any machine.
  • Not overloaded with features, offers a clean UI.
  • Relatively affordable.
  • Sometimes it's quite slow, even despite an excellent Internet connection.
  • Not all features are available for translators from the get-go, for example, only PM can upload/download a translation memory in TMX format which is quite a hassle if you have translators exporting everything into other tools.
  • QA tools are somewhat weak, too many false-positives, which can be very annoying to ignore.
Memsource is perfect for small-medium sized translation agencies that want to handle translation projects more efficiently, while leveraging the power of translation memory. It's definitely not the best online CAT tool on the market, but it gets the job done quite well, although, for their price tag, they could've spent a bit more time on ironing out the user experience.
